Advantages of Cloth Diapers

Save Money

Cloth diapers may have a higher up-front cost when compared to disposable diapers, but they quickly pay for themselves. If you consider that a baby uses about 7 diapers a day, every day, for three years, the savings can be substantial.

You will need about 12 cloth diapers for your baby if you wash them once per day, or 24 diapers if you wash them every other day. At $19.95 each, that comes to about $240 for 12, or $480 for 24. Properly cared for, these diapers will last for a full three years, and may even be used for more than one baby.

Disposable diapers at 35 cents each will cost $2.45 per day if the baby is changed 7 times. That's $894 per year, or $2683 over three years!

In just over three months, the cost of disposable diapers will have already exceeded the total cost of cloth diapers for the full three years. The total savings over three years will be over $2000

Save the Environment

Cloth diapers also have the advantage of being much more environmentally friendly than disposable diapers. Seven diapers in one day will fill a one gallon trash can. Seven diapers a day, 365 days a year, for three years will fill nearly twenty two 50-gallon trash cans. Using cloth diapers prevents all of that waste from going to a land fill, and saves energy and resources on the manufacturing side. Plus, if you pay for trash removal, you will save even more money by having that much less trash to haul away.

Save your Baby's Bottom

The latex, bleach, and other chemicals used to manufacturer disposable diapers can cause skin irritation in babies, which can sometimes result in severe diaper rash that doesn't respond well to diaper cream. Cloth diapers don't use any of these chemicals. Babies with latex allergy or chemical sensitivity (which often go undiagnosed) can see dramatic improvement within only a few days when switched to cloth diapers.
